The postcards of Greece are filled with images of cats lazing
in the bright sun in doorways, on roofs and across walls. Naturally
visitors are always interested to know how the island’s animals are
cared for.
Agistri is proud that thanks to the hard work and committment
of Wendy Yule, with the financial help of Animal Respect, its record
of animal care and welfare is better than on many other Greek islands.
For the past fifteen years Wendy has set up an animal health programme running alongside cat feeding stations which are replenished every other day. Vets come to Agistri and ensure as many cats as possible are neutered in order to control the size of the cat population.
Agistri is justifiably proud that it has no stray dogs
on the island – all
have their personal owners. The dog pictured here is Tanya who is approaching
twelve years of age and coming into being an elderly Agistrioti! She
is famous among the regular visitors to the island for spending her summers ‘adopting’ tourists
who she follows faithfully for the duration of their stay, never demanding
food only revelling in getting to know new people! All this, much
to the frustration of her owners who find it hard to keep up with her whereabouts
over the season! So, when you visit Agistri, look out for Tanya – there
is no need to feed her, just say hello!
All of the animal welfare work on Agistri is undertaken on a purely voluntary
basis by Wendy to whom the island is very grateful. Her work is financially
supported by donations alone.
If you feel you can support Wendy's work, get in contact with her or send a
donation.
