Although there are many adventures to be had around the island of Agistri,
its close proximity to Athens makes it an ideal base for a visit to the
capital and some island hopping.
In respect of timing, it is easy
to visit Athens for a day and take in the sites such as
the Acropolis, the market at Monastiraki and the city’s museums.
Aegina is our nearest neighbouring
island and much larger than Agistri and its picturesque point is packed
with bars, cafes and shops.
Only ten minutes Agistri to Aegina by our locally owned boat, the Agistri Express, visit the Temple of Aphaia and the cathedral of Agios Nektarios which is the second largest Greek Orthodox Church after Agia Sofia.
Agistri is the smallest island in the Saronic Gulf group
of islands which includes Poros, Spetses, Hydra, Aegina and Salamina. It
is possible to take day trips to many other islands in the group to add
an extra element of adventure to your holiday. Returning the same
day is naturally dependent on ferry timetables and asking the port police
or at your accommodation should furnish you with the correct, up to date
information.
There are day trips which can be taken which will sail you all around the
island – which is the only way to see a 360° view of Agistri
as it is not possible to walk its full circumference. These
trips take various forms generally starting at around 10.00h and finishing
about 17.30h and taking in other places of interest across a range of excursions.
All include stops for swimming, snorkelling and eating, all essentials
ingredients for a great day out!
For those looking a romantic trip or simply do not want to lose beach time,
you can also take a boat around the island at sunset. It is magical,
and you will drink in the day as it comes to its end along with a little
ouzo!
You may choose to visit Moni with its emerald sea and hidden coves. Moni
has an old fort and children will love to feed the wild deer and peacocks
which are the main inhabitants of this little isle. It may be your wish
to take a trip to the small port of Perdika for lunch at one
of the wonderful tavernas found along the quays at this pretty village.
Agistri is only 40 minutes by boat from the ancient theatre at Epidavros.
Take in the underwater city found near its shores, marvel at the ancient
theatre with its amazing acoustics and swim, snorkel and kayak to your
heart’s
content. This is a truly memorable day out and a much nicer way
to travel than the alternative of a hot bus trip via Athens!
The incredible engineering feat which is the Corinth Canal can also be
easily reached by a pre-arranged boat trip from Agistri. This spectacular
link between the Ionian and Aegean seas opened in 1893.
Rosy's Little Village will be happy to help you organise to participate
in any of the wide variety of day trips available to visitors.
